| We Need a Rain, Bad August 2, 2007 13:48:18 We have not had a good rain for about a month now. By a good rain I mean one that saturates the ground. With temperatures climbing into the 90's every day it really puts stress on my garden plants. You can see in the pics below what the heat does to some plants. A lot of plants under the current conditions we have wilt in the summer heat just to keep alive. You can see the okra and the zuchinni plants wilted in the pics here. The zucchini plants are too young to have produced anything yet and amazingly the okra continues to put pods on. I just cut this okra two days ago and it has more pods on it already. ![]() I really do not want to use water out of my well to water with and I am kicking myself for not getting busy and setting some barrels to store rain water in. I intended to price plastic garbage cans yesterday when I was in a large home improvement store and forgot to.
I think I will get at least two barrels and connect them together with a union and put them under a gutter downspout. I will have to cover them and make sure mosquitoes do not propagate in them. We use a large plastic trash can for horse water so I know they will hold up well. They can even take freezing solid without breaking. It would be cool to have wooden ones but I do not know where around here I would even find them and if I did they would probably cost a bundle. I just got a video capturing setup for my laptop which I have not tried yet but I may try to make the rain barrel setup a video that I can post on this site. Stay tuned. Comment on this article |
