My Tomatoes in the Garden and How They Are Planted
May 7, 2008 08:49:54

I use the same method on tomatoes as I go potatoes. The tomatoe plants need to have plenty of room. Consequently, there is a lot of open ground that will just grow weeds and you have to keep getting those weeds out of there. Unless, you just mulch the whole thing. Then there is no weeding and the ground will stay nice and moist long after the rain stops.

First, I work the ground to plant the first row. I cover an area with paper and straw and then plant the row of plants down the edge of the paper. I work the next area then lay another length of paper right along the first piece and up against the tomatoe plants. I just repeat the process as much as I want. I did not plant as many plants as last year. We had so many tomatoes last year we could not use them all or give them away, or make sauce out of them all.

I usually plant my pepper plants in the same area as my tomatoes so they get the same treatment with the mulch. In addition to not needing weeding the ground also stays cooler and moist. This mulching was a big factor in keeping things going for us during last years summer drought.
