Number of comments 0 Big Storm Rolling In...................... July 17, 2007 10:01:07 It is 10:51 AM and there is a big line of storms rolling in. I have been watching the radar online and it almost looks like it is kind of splitting and going around us. The rain is starting to pick up but I think the heaviest rain will miss us I took this picture of a broccoli plant the other day showing some side heads. Since taking the picture all the plants in the row have produced more small heads. It really has been the best broccoli I have grown. The weather has helped a lot because it continues to periodically cool off when it rains. Broccoli likes cool wet weather so 80 degrees in July is cool around here.
What has also been a big help has been the mulching around the plants. I used paper and straw. It keeps the weeds down and holds the moisture in. As long as I keep regular applications of Dipel on them they will continue to produce for a long time.
This broccoli is so tender and fresh it is great cut up into salads. It also is good lightly steamed. You can also see on the right side of the picture showing the rows of broccoli and cabbage a row of brussel sprouts which have been excellent this year. They are in need of picking today and after the rain is over and the plants dry off I might get out there and pick some for supper. Comment on this article |
