An Introduction ..... June 2007
I have been gardening all my life which right now is a little more than 58 years worth. When I was a child my parents had a garden and I used to work and enjoy eating the stuff from their garden. I have been gardening in my current location for about 28 years or so. I think I will continue as long as I can plant the seed because you cannot beat the fresh food. Regular vegetables is mostly what grows in my garden. Mostly I just grow what I like to eat. My garden is in West Central Illinois. Which I consider to be fortunate. What, you may ask is so great about that. Well, what is so great about it is the soil. No, I do not have the rich black prairie soil you see across Central Illionis. My soil is a timber soil type on a spot that was a feed lot for many years. It works very nicely in the spring as long as you do not work it too wet. If you work it too wet it will stay cloddy for the whole year until winter works it back down by freezing and thawing. So, you are probably thinking, if it was a feedlot it must be on a farm. Yes, you are correct. Gardening on a farm or just out in the country definitely has its advantages. Probably the biggest is you don't have the neighbors watching you. Another advantage is it does not have to be all neat and orderly all the time. I look at gardens where ever I go and some are so weed free and orderly they are really admirable. My spot is a continual challenge of holding back the invasive type weeds and even trees. I may interject a little bit about the environment from time to time because it is something that interests me since I live in it. And maybe even farming might come up once in a while. That is a subject I cannot avoid living here in Illinois. Well, the website or blog you are now looking at and reading is for me to talk about gardening and how I do things. But, also, it is for me to ask about how others do things and try to gain some knowledge about this whole affair. I am not going to tell people how to garden. My hope is others will post info on the site about what they do and maybe we all can do a better job in the future. Thanks. Read On. |
