I Might Be Done Gardening for This Year
September 14, 2008 14:49:06

Hurricane Ike just went by and dropped another 3 or 4 inches of rain on us. Unless we hit a long dry spell I probably will do little else in the garden this year. I have a small amount of spinach, lettuce, and radishes that came up from an August planting. Also some green beans which are growing really well but do not know if they will produce anything.

I had intended to grow another green manure crop on a large part of the garden but it simply has not been dry enough for the past month to work the ground. Also, I wanted to spread some horse manure and work it in. I will not put it on if I can not work it in. I do need to go out and pull a few weeds that have grown up but right now it is just mud out there.

One would have never imagined a wet year like this after last years drought. It will be interesting to see what happens the next few weeks. I have always thought it would stay warm late in the year. Last year I did not have a fire in my wood stove until November which is unusual. As for winter, who knows what will happen. If the incessant rain continues even after it gets colder it could be long snowy icy winter.

On the other hand, if we hit a week of dry fall weather with some sunshine I will probably get out spread some manure and work it in. I also have a bag of kelp meal that we feed to the horses that got wet and moldy so I am going to put that on the garden too.
