First Planting on March 25 2008
March 25, 2008 17:07:48

I looked at this spot in the garden this morning and thought I probably would not be able to do anything today. About 4 PM I went out and looked again and decided I could probably scratch the surface and get some seeds in. I used the decrepit old push cultivator to work just the surface enough so I could cover the seed. I made three passes and planted half rows of each thing I guess about 8 to 10 feet apiece.

The old cultivator is held together by baling wire but it was sufficient to get the top couple of inches broken up. I don't think I could actually till this with a tiller because if you go very deep it would just bring up mud. I only use this technique early like this when I want to get at least a little stuff in early.

So, I planted some lettuce, one of those mixes, some radishes, spinach, broccoli raab, and some cilantro. I have never planted cilantro before. If half of it comes up I don't know what I will do with it all. Maybe I will dry some of or maybe we could let it go to seed and make coriander.

The ground is probably just barely warm enough for germination. In fact, there is really nothing coming up in the way of early weeds. If we have a little sun it would be good. If it turns wet and cold I probably will have to replant. But, it is worth the risk if we get early greens. I am really tired of store bought vegetables.

It seems once I plant some stuff for the first time each year there is a mental shift that goes on. The dead of winter is suddenly over and there are living things outside to be concerned about. And the things like clean manure out of the horse barn and working on tightening up my rabbit fence are moved to top of the to do list.
