| Dry Weather Planting Cool Season Crops August 24, 2007 13:46:30 We wanted to have some fall garden going but it was getting too late and the weather has been hot and dry. Since I have the rain barrel that I made I can go into town and get water so I dedided to try something to see if I could get some things going for a fall garden. The most difficult thing this time of year is getting these vegetables like spinach, radishes, and lettuce to germinate. We have had no rain and the ground is completely dried out. In addition, it was over 100 degrees several days last week. The key to getting things to germinate was keeping the ground moist enough. I worked the ground twice to get a good seed bed and planted the seed thick. I figured if any of it came up I would be lucky. After planting I covered the rows with straw to shade the ground and keep the soil temps somewhat lower. As you all know I made the rain barrel out of the trash can. I tied it in the back of my little truck and went into town and filled it up. Everyday I watered the rows in the evening after the sun went down.
4.77 Mbs Windows Media file w/sound The radishes came up first and then the lettuce and the spinach is just starting to come up. I had to uncover the spinach a little bit so it could get through the straw. The real key was keeping the ground wet. I video taped the whole process and edited it down so it wasn't too big. Just learning about the video editing software I have and tried adding some music. That is me and my son playing a fiddle tune. My son is playing the guitar. Also did the voice over because the sound of the tiller is not that interesting. Comment on this article |
