| Growing a Buckwheat Green Manure Crop August 31, 2007 13:35:59 I like to use buckwheat as a green manure crop. It grows fast and will germinate in rather dry conditions. This summer has been especially dry so growing a crop to turn into the soil was a challenge.
The buckwheat pictured at the end of the video had about a 1/2 inch rain on it while it was beginning to germinate. I do not know if it would have come up as well as it did without that rain. It is also an uneven stand which is probably due to the dry weather and the method of planting. I buy my buckwheat seed at a natural foods store. It is unhulled buckwheat and it does just fine. It is not cheap since it is a food grade product. If buckwheat is grown in your area you could probably get some from a farmers elevator or a farm supply store. Part of the garden shown in the video has already had one crop turned under this year. With its fast growth habits buckwheat is great for places where you have finished growing something for the season but still have time to plant a green manure crop and work it in.
