After one storm missed us to the south after lunch the clouds opened up about 3:30 and we got about an inch of rain in about 15 minutes. We had a brief shower early this morning also but it was dried off by noon. But this afternoon wet things down pretty good.I planted some buckwheat about a week ago and it is up good. I was wondering if the rabbits would eat it off but they don't seem to be too interested. I only had a pound of seed which I bought at a natural foods store. I was not even sure if it would germinate since it had the hulls off and was ready to cook. I broadcast the seed over a small area of the garden. So it is a little uneven. I was trying to cover the area and not waste any. Really should have had more seed.
I will let the buckwheat grow until it starts to flower and then till it under. It would be nice to let it flower for a while and let some bees feed on it but I am not sure if we have any hives around right now. We have numerous old catalpa trees that have provided places for hives over the years. Sorry to say we lost one of those trees in a storm that was right next to the garden. It had a living hive in it when it split and went over. The bees left and I have not seen many honey bees this year. There have been articles in papers in Illinois about bee hives dying out. The bees go out and don't seem to be able to find their way back. Some speculation has it that cell phone density in the state has caused the problem. But, if we have no bees for pollination we will be up a creek without a paddle as they say. Comment on this article |
